How to check if an online casino is licensed (UK and Sweden)

A licence from your own country's regulator means the casino has to protect your money, verify your age, offer self-exclusion and handle complaints properly. Checking takes about two minutes.

The short answer

To check if an online casino is licensed, find the company name and licence number at the bottom of its website. Then search for it on the official register: the Gambling Commission's public register in the UK, or Spelinspektionen's list in Sweden. No match means don't play.

Step by step

  1. 1Scroll to the very bottom of the casino's website. Licensed casinos list the company name and licence number there.
  2. 2Open the official register for your country: the UK Gambling Commission public register, or Spelinspektionen's list of licence holders in Sweden.
  3. 3Search the company name or licence number from the footer.
  4. 4Check the licence is active and that the website you're on is listed under it.

Red flags

  • No company name or licence number in the footer.
  • A licence only from somewhere else, when the site clearly targets your country.
  • Bonus terms that break your country's rules, like more than 10x wagering on a UK offer.
  • Being told to use a different web address because the main one is blocked.

Questions

Is a Malta licence enough for UK players?

No. To take UK players, a casino needs a licence from the UK Gambling Commission. In Sweden, it needs one from Spelinspektionen.

What if a casino isn't on the register?

Don't play there. You'd lose the protections a licence gives you, including self-exclusion and a proper complaints route.
